Khendo FM

A radio station whose website is part of the transmission rather than a poster for it.

Situation

The station came to the studio on a legacy platform that had grown into a brochure with a play button attached, which is the usual shape for a broadcast site. The pages a listener actually wants, shows, presenters, a schedule, were not really there.

It was also heavy. Radio audiences are mobile and frequently on constrained data, and weight loaded before the player becomes usable is weight between a listener and the station.

What we did

The station got the pages it did not have. Shows, presenters and schedules as records, so the archive and the strip that says what is on now are the same data rather than three things somebody has to remember to update.

Then the site was wired to the signal. On-air state and now-playing are read from the broadcast and proxied through the site, so listeners never reach the streaming origin directly and the station is not exposed to whatever load a viral moment brings.

Weight came down accordingly. The play button is the primary action on the whole site and it should be interactive before anything decorative has finished loading.

Worth stealing

A station site should know whether the station is on air

Most broadcast sites are brochures with a play button bolted on, while the station itself has a real-time state nobody is reading. Deriving the site from that state removes a whole category of manual updating, and it is the difference between a website about a radio station and a website that is part of one.

Scope

  • Migration off a legacy CMS
  • Shows, presenters and schedules
  • Stream status and now-playing
  • Listener player and on-air state
  • Performance and asset cost
