COFEK

A rebuild of cofek.africa for the country’s consumer watchdog, an organisation whose credibility is the product.

Situation

COFEK exists to be believed by people who have already been misled by somebody else. That makes a website’s job unusually narrow and unusually strict: state what the federation does, make its positions findable, and put nothing on the page that cannot be stood behind.

It also rules out most of what a redesign normally reaches for. Stock photography of happy consumers, claims about impact, figures with no source. Here each of those costs more credibility than it buys.

What we did

Information architecture first. What the organisation publishes, who it is for, and how somebody arriving mid-complaint finds the one page that helps them.

The design system runs from a single token block, so the federation can be restated or re-branded without a rebuild. That matters for an organisation whose identity is older than its website and will outlive it.

Built static to begin with, with structured content staged behind it as the editorial load grows. Shipping the simpler thing first suits a publishing rhythm that is irregular by nature.

Worth stealing

Credibility is a subtractive design problem

For an organisation like this, most of the work is deciding what not to put on the page. Every unsupported claim, stock image and rounded-up figure is a small withdrawal from the only account the organisation has. Restraint is not an aesthetic here. It is the product.
