A studio that takes fees from some clients and equity from others is really two businesses with one payroll, and they behave nothing alike. Fee work pays on invoice and funds the month. Equity work pays years later or not at all. Keeping both running at once is mostly a question of knowing, at any given point, how much of the second the first can currently carry.

He is the reason the studio writes down which deal it is proposing before anyone starts. A fee arrangement and an equity arrangement change what the team is willing to argue for, and leaving that ambiguous until the invoice is the cheapest way to lose a client you liked.
